Child dies from crash injuries SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -
9-year-old Oceana Irizzary, who was critically injured in the plane crash off Caspersen Beach in Venice on Sunday afternoon, has died.
Bill Pellan, Director of Investigations for the Pinellas County Medical Examiner tells 8 on Your Side that Irizarry died at 9:23 p.m. Monday night at All Children's Hospital. At this point Pellan said there is no cause of death listed. An autopsy will most likely take place Wednesday, Pellan said.
Irizarry's family is not conducting interviews and wants the media to respect their privacy, according to a spokesman at All Children's Hospital, but they did release this statement through ACH:
"Our precious Oceana has joined her daddy in heaven. She was nine years old. Oceana was a beautiful, intelligent and kind-hearted little girl. She was a natural artist who loved to learn. She was looking forward to the 4th grade.
Ommy, a Sergeant First Class in the Army, was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend and soldier. He lit up the room whenever he entered and was devoted to his family.
There are no words to describe the suffering we are experiencing. Their loss is devastating to our family and to everyone who knew them.
Thank you to our many loved ones, friends and strangers for your outpouring of love and prayers. Although they are gone, Ommy and Oceana live on through organ donation. Forever, they will be in our hearts.
To all of those who helped us on the beach and medical personnel, thank you for your efforts to save them. We will always be grateful to All Children's Hospital for your skilled and loving care of Oceana and our family.
In sorrow, the Irizarry and Power families"
There is little question Irizarry died from injuries sustained when the plane made a forced landing on the beach in Venice Sunday and collided with her and her father. That much is clear. But many people--including Pellan-- are asking the same question about the circumstances of this tragedy, "What are the chances of that happening?" said Pellan.
The investigation into the crash as well as the deaths of Oceana and her father, 36-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Ommy Irizarry is continuing, according to the Sarasota Sheriff's Office.
The pilot of the plane, Karl Kokomoor is the president of DMK Associates in Venice and Englewood.
DMK issued a statement:
" All of us at DMK Associates are deeply saddened and are continuing to pray for the comfort of the family in this loss. Karl Kokomoor is assisting the FAA and related agencies with the accident investigation."
